About

OUTDISTANCE | Italian Brutalism

Outdistance is the latest series from prominent architecture photographer, Derek Swalwell. Inspired by the work of Italy’s renowned architects, Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Rossi, Carlo Aymonino and their famed sites, Brian Cemetery, San Cataldo Cemetery and the Gallaratese complex Swalwell focuses on the detail of these designs.

Capturing the magnetic dance between architecture and light and illuminating new perspectives in these locations, Swalwell uses photography to highlight the sculptural elements. In this work where architecture dominates the landscape and nature encroaches in subtle, almost bashful sidelines, we’re reminded of the monolithic qualities of the 20th-century architecture and their impact on contemporary design.

In a true sense of a passionate obsession, Swalwell frames the structure in a style of reverence. Paying tribute to these design greats, he explores these locations with a loving curiosity, accentuating texture, light and composition.

“Swalwell’s adoration for structural design in Outdistance is both compelling and contagious.”
