Ailwood House
by Berresford Architecture

House Ailwood is the result of a young couple’s pursuit to salvage an otherwise kooky, dark and outdated south-facing house, sited beneath a sandstone cliff to the north.
Located in the Sydney suburb of Earlwood, and overlooking Turrella Reserve, the design sought to provide clarity to the muddled dwelling. With just a 75 square metre footprint, the three-storey dwelling acts more like a multi-level apartment. The lean plan, paired with minimal circulation and built in joinery, provides the couple with a high level of amenity in a small space, whilst retaining a sense of generosity and gesture.
The revived home promotes simple yet comfortable living. The ever-changing softness of southern light, along with moments of unexpected colour and views, engage the user as they inhabit the space.
