Applecross Residence
by Mata Design Studio
Following thorough and responsive briefing, this project was borne out of a relationship with some inspiring Clients and their desire to create a bespoke forever home that reflects their personal tastes and the requirements of their family unit. The building fabric was partially complete at the time we were introduced and engaged on the project and initially the Client discussed their wish list with us to see what was achievable at that point in time. Authenticity of materiality, ergonomics, clean lines, tailored storage solutions and an outdoor shower in the master ensuite were raised, to name a few. The outcome is unique and personable. American Walnut timbers and brushed Andorra Stone slabs feature throughout as the constant through the primary interior spaces. The aesthetic is monolithic and clean. Details throughout are considered, subtle and understated including solid timbers cabinet frames jointed to create a “T”, a nod to the Client’s surname, and solid walnut dowels under the kitchen counter to support the stone. The kitchen initially designed for the house was much different to the resultant space. Specific items addressed including allowing the Client to be able to access and utilise all the cabinets and kitchen equipment with ease. In order to achieve this, the back counter become full height storage in lieu on counter top with overheads and the island forms the main preparation space which mirrors the Clients’ desire to all come together to bond over meals as a family. The master ensuite, though constructed past the point of being about have an alfresco shower incorporated, was replanned and a large skylight installed over the main shower to give the indoor-outdoor feel. Solid Andorra stone slabs line the walls giving it a monumentality and tactility.
The grigio stone planters allowing greenery to layer the space and further create the outdoor sensibility. The stone planters also feature in the kids ensuites on a smaller scale; skylights located over to allow natural light into the space. The robe area is incorporated into the space with walnut cabinetry and an island storage unit with leather upholstered top. One of the kids ensuites follows a different design concept to suit the end user with perforated leather wall panels, white marble stone shower wall and vanity unit with a pink interior. The guest powder follows a similar palette. The large bedroom spaces were replanned to give each occupant privacy within the room to create a sanctuary type feel. The master has a separate sitting area upon entry with the bed tucked behind. The kids’ rooms have a small reception console/desk at the entry to create a drop zone, study area and privacy screen with white marble plinth and the American Oak table top. The bed then tucks in behind to create a private zone for refuge. The Luceplan bedside lamps are the common theme between all these rooms. The space at night truly comes alive as a result of the lighting design and creates a sense of warmth within the home and further highlights the natural finishes and features throughout. The light fixtures used in the project have been selected as artworks in themselves or highlight surfaces to enhance their innate qualities with pieces from Atelier Areti, Marset, Flos, Volker Haug, Luceplan, Michael Anastassiades and Erco to name a few.
