From The Designer
Commissioned by Herman Miller in 2011, Aril takes its inspiration from the forms of hyperbolic growth such as those found in wattle seed pods. Like the Fleur-de-Lis, this design reads like a decorative distillation of natural forms. This was the starting point of the design though there are other threads of inspiration, particularly that of a Madonna-like figure as is apparent from the side view – the idea is for the chair to have a form that feels like being embraced from behind. The disk bases have an internal ball race and blend into a cantilevered arm enabling both a swivel and reclining movement.
