The Compartment Apartment by Tecture is a triumph for strong design and how it can be used to overcome significant architectural challenges.
A large column presented a challenge for the design when opening up this Richmond apartment, that was originally a small kitchen with an equal size laundry. After removing the internal walls to open up the apartment, the architects were left with a large column in the centre of the space. Tecture chose to embrace the column, choosing to clad the column in Statuario to create a series of monolithic moments anchoring the new layout of the kitchen.
Tecture were asked to design a sleek inner city apartment with minimal luxury at the forefront. By opening up the apartment, Ben Robertson and his team chose to embrace the column by cladding it in Statuario stone and creating 3 monolithic moments against a sleek contrasting wall of joinery.
The hero of the kitchen is the Statuario stone on the island bench/column from Signorino Tile Gallery, which sits infront of black 2PAC cabinetry, to highlight the stone in its purity, becoming the stand out in this apartment.
The end result is a timeless and minimalist kitchen that is thoughtful with its storage to reflect its apartment nature, yet expansive enough to reinstate it as the heart of the home.
