Double Bay House
by MHNDU
A new modern extension wraps around an existing 1880’s terrace creating a clear distinction between the old and the new. Working closely with architecture studio MHNDU together we created a large, open plan dwelling of concrete, timber and bronze which opens itself up to the harbour views. The spaces can then be closed off via sliding screens which allow the light to filter through to great effect. It was paramount that the experience when walking from the outside to inside was seamless, and that the form and materiality of the architecture was respected and complemented. Being largely transparent, the inside of the house needed to be at one with the exterior. External finishes of concrete and timber were therefore carried through to the inside. It was crucial that the house felt cohesive. The palette was simply bluestone, European oak and concrete teamed with grey veneer and white/grey stone. Details were strong, clean & thoughtful.
