Ecclectic Beach House
by Alexander Pollock Design
The holiday beach home was for a single middle age gentleman. The client’s apartment in Melbourne city had a more serious and luxe vibe, he wanted the beach house to be relaxed, playful and eclectic. It was important to have an open gas fire, a bar cabinet and extensive shelving for his book collection. The concept was a mix of organic shapes, colour and retro influences. The original home was built in the 70s and was typical of Australian weatherboard homes. In the interior, the ceiling and walls were stained in orange hue, typical of the 70s. The entire home was fully gutted and fitted with new floorboards, kitchen, wardrobes, bathroom and laundry. The fireplace was resurfaced and tiled in stone that was once lava. We have also added a large skybox for the entry area for more natural light. An outstanding feature worth mentioning were the high vaulted ceilings which was the perfect opportunity for a large floating sculptural piece. I was inspired by the murmuration of birds at dusk and commissioned artist Michael Baird to adapt his metal mesh ribbon sculptures to represent this. We created a few prototypes before settling on this configuration. Another favourite feature is the crackle paint effect on the walls.
