Elwood Residence
by Doherty Design
Elwood Residence sees Doherty Design reinject life utilising colour as muse for this quirky Melbourne home. Engaged to transform this existing art deco manor, at the core of the new works is a celebration of charm and character. Through the expression and highlighting of the leadlight windows and doors, detailed cornicing, ceiling roses and architraves throughout, that remain restored. There is an overall sense of glamour inherent in the nuanced touches throughout, where a seeming balance act between the original and the contemporary unfold. The combination of opaque soft sculptural lighting elements, moody darkened timber, herringbone tiled floor and custom upholstered furniture pieces are combined with refined metal touches and texturally engaging fabrics and opulent velvets. Taking inspiration from the original leadlight details, custom joinery pieces connect to the home’s heritage, emphasising volumes and grandeur. Doherty Design combine clean contemporary insertions in the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms, together with a focus on the existing character of the home’s deco era style. Elwood Residence embodies a theatrical glamour and houses contextually appropriate nods to personality throughout.
