Firewood & Candles
by RVA
Firewood & Candles by RVA is an elemental homage to long forgotten life set amongst the backdrop of the Australian wilderness.
At its core Firewood & Candles is a residential interior architecture alterations project located in Main Ridge on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. From the beginning RVA set out to retain the raw and utilitarian nature of an agricultural building balanced with calm tones of a main ridge dawn.
The building envelope of concrete block walls retain the raw agricultural nature of the former dairy. The insertions within this envelope are joinery and furniture which are of a hand-made nature and are offset with a homogenous wash of calm muted grey tones in stans and paints applied to re-used and reclaimed timbers. This evokes a uniquley old fashioned feel that transports the occupants to a bygone era of Australian architecture.
Nestled within the home the occupants are wrapped up by the soft internal underbelly, firewood burning alight this inconspicuous outbuilding glows like a candle flickering in the distant winter mist.
Interior elements are layered against the more structured, utilizing natural colours and textures as seen in the clay, timber, coir and linens.
The bedroom utilises a soft colour palate that clashes with the harsh tones of the Australian wilderness in a dramatic way. The home provides shade and comfort to occupants in the summer and shelter coupled with warmth in the winter.
The bathroom pays homage to the dairy ‘coolroom’ offering a deliberate departure of crisp white awakening for an invigorating start to the day. The bathroom is heated by the glorious rising morning sun at the higher level.
The Firewood & Candles project by RVA is a private wilderness sanctuary for the occupants. Like the lyrics of the Paul Kelly song bearing the same name – Firewood and candles, making shadows on the wall. Is that the gods come to Earth, or a mule kicking in our stall? Making all these memories, forever gonna keep us warm, when firewood and candles disappear in the storm.
