A modern European styled contemporary extension to an existing Victorian home in Ivanhoe.
Designers Chiverton Architects were briefed to add an extension to the rear of the existing house to create a two-generational home, which would be open, allow natural light and compliment the surrounded landscape of lush landscape.
The extension included a living, dining and kitchen area, and a bedroom with a walk-in robe and ensuite.
Design to the new extension needed to be sustainable, as the client has a strong interest in Merchant Builders homes, with a passion for Danish modernist architecture. To achieve these two ideas, interior of the house features American oak floors with an oil finish and Accoya timber stained black, cedar windows.
Key challenges for the design was to connect the building with the landscape on a sloping site. To accommodate for the slope, designers terraced the building down the hill.
Orientation of the house was also a big factor, along with the positioning of windows and associated shadding systems; such as a pergola and bifold screens. Over insulation, water tanks, solar hot water and solar PV panels have also been included.
All of which assist with maintaining the sustainability of the house, along with dimable LED lights throughout, evaporative cooling and hydronic heating.
A kitchen garden was also created next to the kitchen, for easy access when food preparing.
