The Salty Dog Hotel

The Salty Dog Hotel is a commercial hospitality interior design project located in the Tasmanian suburb of Kingston by Danielle Brustman and Michelle Boyde for the partnership Brustman + Boyde in collaboration with Pippa Dickson.

The wonderful partnership of Brustman and Boyde, in collaboration with hotel owner Pippa Dickson, have turned a standard 1970s beachside motel into a beautiful bar and dining space that strongly references Australian coastal language.

In response to the clients brief, Brustman + Boyde adapted the style and spirit of the seventies and the light colour palette of the beach. The studio made minimalist moves that were carefully chosen to achieve maximum change.

The design work included a process of scraping away layers of panelling, wallpaper and electrical detritus to reveal the very essence of the existing structure and to ultimatley create a stunning space that captures and reflects the coastal light. The emphasis has been solidly on the front bar, but the large back bar has also been redefined as a relaxed function room adjoining the beer garden.

A hot pink circular booth and bar seating, designed by Brustman and Boyde in collaboration with Pippa Dickson and built by Knightsbridge furniture, brings retro styling and beanbags for the beer garden have been designed by Boyde based on the shape of seventies Tetra Paks. Tiles wrap horizontally, vertically and diagonally at forty-five degrees to define the dining spaces. White walls and a long mirror behind the bar replicate the graphics and playfully bring lightness and reflection to the room.

Brustman + Boyde, in collaboration with hotel owner Pippa Dickson, have created a stunning bar interior that uniquley mixes modern lightness with retro beach front design.
