Thornbury Apartment
by po-co Architecture
The Thornbury Apartment by po-co Architecture is a residential interior design project within an existing space in the Victorian suburb of Thornbury.
The project is a contemporary update to a 70’s apartment in Thornbury which included a full renovation of the existing kitchen and bathroom for a client with Danish roots. Lots of storage was added to these areas, making living here an inviting long term option.
The starting point for the design was the Danish heritage of the owner, so a classic material palette of dark stained timbers combined with white film faced plywood was selected. The highlight of this minimal palette were the boldly patterned encaustic cement floor tiles, which knit the two functional spaces of the home together.
The kitchen needed to be able to work as the social hub of the home without making any alteration to the overall plan to open up to the dining/living area. Bench space was doubled by relocating the fridge and pantry to the opposite wall, creating a galley style kitchen, with enough space for guests to congregate comfortably during cooking activities.
A large laundry closet was added to the bathroom to conceal the typically unsightly aspects of a shared bathroom-laundry area – this was integrated neatly into the rest of the bathroom joinery and frameless glass shower opposite, which backs onto yet another useful full height storage cupboard.
No space was left under-utilised, but the existing light-filled aspect of the apartment meant that these new spaces feel rich, yet bright and spacious, and complement the rich and interesting collection of possessions of a well-travelled owner.
