Riverside Alterations & Additions by Lachlan Shepherd Architects is the renovation of a old fibro beach-shack which has now been transformed into open and relaxing family retreat.

Sitting quietly near the beaches of Torquay in Victoria, this one average fibro beach-shack has been re-designed by Lachlan Shepherd Architects as a family friendly and cosy retreat, with plenty of open spaces and an abundance of natural light.

Designers utilised half of the existing roof structure and removed the other half to create a new raked rook structure, with highlight glazing for increased ventilation and light throughout the home.

The living zone was extended and re-created with the kitchen functioning as an indoor-outdoor serving zone, and the house was re-clad and re-roofed, essentially creating a ‘new’ building over the bones of the existing fibro shack.

Much of the internal work was undertaken by the owner-occupier, including custom built timber joinery units, flooring, roof-lining, wall boxes and doors. And designers utilised some of the recycled structure from the demolished roof section, to help create these additional components throughout.

By adding a north-facing deck; which opens off the kitchen and dining area, the house opens up to the outdoor area when entertaining friends and family. This extension also helps enhance the feel of the main area of the house, bringing the indoors out and the outdoors in, with the use of bifold doors; which open up the diving spaces for more space and light.

Timber is the main feature through each space of the house, and has been used extensively both inside and outside, creating a soft and homey feel throughout.
