Sustainable Terrace
by Green Sheep Collective Architects
A modern Australian architectural design of sustainability and comfort
This modern two-storey terrace house designed by Green Sheep Collective Architects, creates a beautiful indoor space of natural light and provides great flexibility of function between the indoors and the outdoors.
As the house is located on a narrow property, and situated on the north boundary, Green Sheep Collective, and builders Elyte Focus were faced with many great challenges, in creating a house with good passive solar design, to create better sustainability throughout.
In response to these challenges, design of this house is a beautiful well-lit space of natural light, spread across an open plan living design, which opens up into a courtyard, bringing the indoors outdoors and visa-versa.
Included into outlay of the new house, is a series of north facing clerestory windows, which naturally light up and heat up the home in winter, whilst acting as a thermal chimney to remove heat in summer. This is done by drawing heat up and out of the house.
The central courtyard provides additional connections to the garden, natural ventilation and natural light to central rooms in the home, while decking and balconies allow for the living room and flexible master bedroom to open to the outdoors and provide views and a great sense of space.
The outcome is a well-ventilated house, which natural cools in summer, and naturally warms in winter; reducing the carbon footprint of using heaters and air conditioners.
