Hawea Flat House
by Mason & Wales Architects
Situated on Hawea Flat at the base of Mt Maude, this Mason & Wales house faces sun and views to the North on an expansive building platform. Designed for a family returning south, the house includes accommodation and amenities for family and friends to share. The house is grounded in local schist stone while the floating roof form rests like wings atop timber columns with horizontal cedar cladding. The roof design subtly references the clients distinguished career in aviation. Strong horizontal forms represent the surrounding environment with natural materials that blend into the landscape and will weather gracefully overtime.
Interior materials continue the exterior palette and further compliment the tones and textures of the landscape as it changes through the seasons. Natural materials have been used wherever possible, with practical and durable surfaces to satisfy the rigours of daily life.
