Heritage Cottage, Port Melbourne
by Alexandra Buchanan Architecture
The Alexandra Buchanan Architecture team use clever functional design to create space within the constraints of an inner-city Melbourne cottage.
The extension and renovation to this heritage cottage in Port Melbourne establishes a unique sense of spaciousness that manages to defy the challenging constraints of a tight urban setting. The transformation also allows a young family to remain in a neighbourhood they cherish and live in a contemporary home that provides them with the required space to develop.
A second storey addition at the rear of the cottage creates space for two extra bedrooms in a loftlike setting. Discreet windows capture city views and deliver natural light to the interior. Downstairs, a compact kitchen and living space is made to feel more generous by means of a double height volume created above the lounge. A skylight and high level window introduce light from above and illuminate the pathway from the front door.
Dark grainy timber finishes, used in the kitchen and living room, draw on the aesthetic of the historic timber floors to create warmth and textural interest.

“Alexandra Buchanan Architecture made our housing dreams a reality! The innovative design provides a feeling of space in our small inner city block.”
Alexander Buchanan Architecture have developed a proclivity for transforming traditional architectural spaces through functional contemporary design. With their Heritage Cottage, Port Melbourne project, they have transformed a home and in the process positively impacted the life of a young family as well.
