‘A House With Tiles On It’ is a multi-award winning architectural project designed by Welsh + Major Architects and located in the Sydney suburb of Haberfield. For this project Welsh + Major were presented with an existing Federation house and given the task of modernising the traditional elements whilst at the same time maintaining a piece of Sydney’s residential history.
The house is a freestanding bungalow that had unfortunately been renovated unsympathetically throughout the sixties and seventies. The brief given to Welsh + Major was to reinvigorate the classical home for a family of four to reside in. The result not only reinstates the dignified beauty of the original home but also re-connects with its site and context.
A new pavilion was added to the home to re-align the floor levels and redistribute living spaces that act as a link from the house with the redesigned winter and summer garden spaces. The pavilion from a distance reads as a terracotta volume, shaped by surrounding ridge lines and building setbacks: it acts as a stitch in the streetscape, responding to the requirements of context using a familiar palette.
‘A House With Tiles On It’ by Welsh + Major has received several awards that recognise not only the architectural excellence of the project but also the part Welsh + Major have played in restoring a true part of Sydney’s residential history. In 2012 the firm received a high commendation for heritage in the house awards and in 2014 the project received the ThinkBrick roof tile excellence award.
