A contemporary overhaul was delivered to the interior of this rambling Californian bungalow to bring it up-to-date for a young family of four.
A sophisticated material scheme and customisation transformed the space to produce a modern interior that respects the homes origin.
The brief was initially a kitchen-only renovation. After realising the original floor-plan didn’t make the most of the home’s beautiful views, the brief became – kitchen/pantry, dining, master bedroom, family bathroom, study, WIR and ensuite, laundry and poolside powder room.
The brief concentrated on re-designing the layout to enhance circulation and on a meticulous joinery package. Crucially, the home’s heritage had to be preserved while producing a relaxed refined beauty. With only a small expansion required, spaces were redesigned to accommodate family needs, giving precedence to views and light. With the use of a mellow material palette including timber veneer, ceramic tiles, marble, and mirror finishes, a feel of a contemporary sensibility was softly created. For a visual touch, small splashes of colour were utilised in the process. Old and new were incorporated through white painted surfaces and smoked oak floors.
In the ensuite a curved wall encloses the shower and screens the toilet from view. Natural light is brought into the bathroom via a skylight, reflecting on the surface of the tiles and showing off their colour.
The modernisation of this house is a perfect example of the ability of interior designers to delicately apply principles to prolong the lifespan of architecture for upcoming generations to appreciate and experience.
