This beautiful lakeside home, perched high on the shoreline of Lake Michigan, boasts magnificent horizon views. It was clear form the very beginning the design of the new home needed to capture the vastness of the lake view, and draw in the sea breeze and scenic abundance.
The ‘what appeared to be’ simple scope however became more complicated in reality. Adding significant design challenges were dune setbacks, vehicle easements, and a beautiful and established large oak tree in the centre of the property. The building design took a direction to allow for these and saw the magnificent oak tree take centre stage celebrating one’s arrival, whilst also shaping the entry and driveway.
Sitting in amongst the dunes the house design consists of a series of flat roofs with contrasting high gable. The blending of rooflines maintains the beach cottage aesthetic without compromising the fullness of the lake views. The flat roof structures allow for covered verandahs at both sides and the ability to incorporate all-essential large windows. Paneled cladding on the exterior is painted in a soft and coastal Cape Cod grey with window joinery and bargeboards painted in standout fresh white. Exposed internal ceiling beams, wood floorboards and soft linens all add to the coastal cottage ambience.
The result is a charming lakeside home with exaggerated views of Lake Michigan from every aspect. A homey warmth and calm emits from within, creating the perfect place to reside and soak up the picturesque and seasonal panorama, and all only a stone’s throw from the waters edge.
