The Malvern Garden House by Taylor Knights Architecture & Interior Design is a project which combines it’s stunning natural surroundings with breathtaking features of modern architecture.

The Malvern Garden House is nestled in a leafy and hilly pocket of Malvern. The highlight feature of the existing 1930’s period home was, and still is, the properties verdant garden which is terraced over 3 levels to accommodate the steep, sloping site.

Taylor Knight’s clients proposed a brief with the garden as a lush and calming backdrop to their daily lives a space they could enjoy and take refuge in with their young growing family.

For Taylor Knights, the initial challenge was the reworking of the complex layout of rooms and corridors that separated the ‘seen’ spaces at the front of the home from the ‘unseen’ at the rear. For many years this problem had limited any real connection with the beautiful garden beyond. The second issue to overcome was the task in rationalising a piecemeal 1980’s first floor addition in the home’s original lofty attic.

From the outset, Taylor Knights worked towards a holistic strategy for the site with the client to pull these ideas and observations together, resulting in a pavilion-like addition that would become the heart of their daily activities. Taylor Knights added a new kitchen and dining space that integrates with the garden and improves the views from within the house. This kitchen and dining space became the central spacial focus of the home, the command centre of sorts.

The clients were keen to explore the use of concrete in the project and loved the solidity that the material evokes. This offered exciting opportunities for Taylor Knights to explore the introduction of a living green roof, which when planted out and established, will spill over the board-formed concrete lip to form a green fringe.

Taylor Knights notably acknowledged how fortunate they were to collaborate on Malvern Garden House with Ben Scott of Ben Scott Garden Design. Ben and his team expertly reimagined the garden into its next stage of life, and with this inspired vision steered project to ensure it would evoke both elegance and beauty through it’s landscape.
