From The Design Studio
The brief from Moffitt.Moffitt called for a warm, welcoming and simple studio environment for a collaborative team of 6 people including a meeting and presentation space for clients.
The existing conditions of provided a deep office shell of concrete and plasterboard at the ground level of a modern apartment building in Surry Hills. Natural light is only provided at one end with base building services and structure creating an irregular perimeter footprint.
With subtle reference to the sibling duality of the client, the design is anchored around a new perimeter lining of oak – a perfectly symmetrical framework, concealing the services and structure, to provide a rectified whole.
Consolidation of support areas and storage at the rear, and the insertion of a new central white wall to accommodate power and data act to foreshorten the space and suggest further facilities beyond those visible.
The illuminated perimeter lining of timber and grey rubber was designed to provide storage, pin-up and display with a suite of shelves and accessories to allow for curatorial change within a given framework.
3 large screens in the window showcase the agency’s work to the street and can be rotated 180 degrees to face the meeting table for internals presentations. A single black beam above this table bounces light off the concrete soffit with and houses focused pinspots to illuminate the working surface.
