Pyrmont Apartment
by Arent & Pyke
Arent and Pyke pride themselves on matching a design with the client’s lifestyle. The Pyrmont Apartment represents the reconciling of this light filled apartment with the clients’ life, with a design strategy that called for an extraordinary assembly of furniture embodying a lifetime of collecting. Pairing classics with bespoke and contemporary design of considerable beauty and authenticity, the home is transformed, art sympathetic and entirely suited to the client.
The bespoke joinery elements were similarly conceived to have no common thread. As such, each piece, while contemporary, was imagined as part of a collection from an expanse of time. The result is a gutsy interior of sculptural form and engaging tableaux. That the clients had an open and curious response to the design process, was an extraordinary bonus in terms of what they would trust the design to deliver.
Classical furniture was key to the success of this design with pieces being chosen to enhance the beauty of the interior through a combination of timeless items. The 1940s Cassina Tokyo Chaise Lounge is paired with a contemporary De La Espada Laurel side table and Atelier Areti Epic pendant, to lend a timelessness to the custom hand painted screen. Similarly, the warmth of the Eames Lounge and Ottoman is matched with the warmth of timber in the custom marble window seat.
Neither however could be said to match, rather, there is a tonal harmony that is carried through rug, chairs, lounge and cabinetry that creates this sense of natural evolution. Essential to the interior design are the bespoke joinery elements where no single thread connects the pieces and materiality is used to define space and aesthetic rather than match individual items to one another.
