Nestled into an existing terraced site this hillside house has been positioned to enjoy panoramic views from Shag Rock to the Southern Alps. Comprised of two bedrooms, all living spaces are accommodated on the First Floor within two parallel box forms. Between these two forms the Snug & the main entry stair links these structures, Which are clad in dark vertical Cedar. The larger, visually dominant, North form houses the Lounge/Dining and Kitchen with a Guest Bedroom & ensuite to the East. The smaller South form is dedicated to the main bedroom facilities.
Formal entry on the Ground Floor is approached from the South flanked by planter boxes & Bespoke screening that shield views to the Lap Pool beyond. The Main stair dissects the two forms and leads up from the edge of the Pool Room providing a visual link to a significant Tree as you assend. When desending the stairs, the Turquoise waters of the Lap Pool entice in the summer months. The Lounge extends past the line of the snug & cantilevers out over the Lap Pool below to provide shelter to the evening deck. Full height glazing on the North & West walls of this cantilevered space provide ample panoramic views & accentuate the cantilever.
A prominent feature of the Red Rock Lane House is a dramatic cantilever over the Pool. This has been achieved by underslinging the load of the two exposed Steel Channels that fork under the Lounge floor. In adopting this structural technique, the cantilever is amplified by the beams travelling significantly past this support line. The cantilever is at most dramatic point from within the Pool Room when the open corner sliders are stacked away to reveal beams flying over the full height glazing with the appearance of no support.
In order to counterpoint the typical Pool fencing requirements & create a strong visual element, bespoke folded aluminium fins have been incorporated. steel beam similar to those under the lounge is projected out to the extent of the cantilever, from which these fins are then contained. On a sunny day, beautiful
filtered light plays on the entry deck delivering privacy, safety and delight. Similar related detailing is then brought inside to support the stair treads from one of the cantilevered beams.
To create sheltered areas around the House the plan deviates away from an existing well established macrocarpa hedge that travels down the North boundary line. This provides a calm triangular lawn area off the Pool Room and opens the internal courtyard which is level with the existing East terrace to morning sun. The result is a seamless intergration from the First Floor Main living areas to the courtyard onto the Vegetable Garden & Pizzeria to capture the last of the evening sun.
