Spring House is the dynamic response to a modest brief to reinvigorate a space and light deprived federation home in Sydney’s north. In a conservative suburban setting where heritage takes polite precedence, the modest street frontage offers glimpses of a new contemporary timber clad extension to the rear. The insertion of a courtyard brings light into the centre of the plan while also providing breathing space for the new and existing forms to interface in harmony. The design incorporates a new sandstone spine at the perimeter of the floorplan, folding up from and extending the existing bungalow’s stone plinth, embracing the new kitchen and living areas. The new living space is afforded an outlook to the lush garden and pool beyond. A simple yet warm material palette creates continuity between the old and the new.
