Venus Bay House
by Welsh + Major
‘Venus Bay House’ by Welsh + Major Architects is an award-winning architecture project located on the stunning coastline of south-eastern Victoria. This robust beach house blends perfectly into its surroundings by sitting easily among the coastal tea-tress on the crest of a hill.
The house was designed as a freestanding object with a series of beautifully designed internal and external spaces carved from within it. The house acts as a beacon of solitude by offering shelter and solace from the harsh climatic elements of the area. It is the perfect environment to curl up under a blanket, safe and warm, whilst the rain batters the coastline.
The house was designed to be deliberately modest to further complement the relaxing coastal environment that surrounds the space. It is also an extremely cost-effective home, as it was built primarily from traditional beach house materials found within the local community. The materials used in construction included simply detailed corrugated metal and fibre cement sheet, plywood and galvanised steel. Adding to the appeal of the ‘Venus Bay House’ is the sustainability and environmental benefits of the project. The house is largely environmentally sustainable utilising photovoltaic cells, solar hot water, rainwater tanks and on site blackwater treatment systems.
The project has also achieved critical acclaim for Welsh + Major Architects who were recognised for their vision, creativity, environmental sustainability and execution. In 2014 ‘Venus Bay House’ received a single housing commendation from the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter, the perfect reward for an outstanding project.
