A favourite of interior designers world-wide, the Camaleonda (a cross between the two Italian words for ‘Chameleon’ and ‘wave’) created by Mario Bellini in 1970 for B&B Italia, had become a rare and highly sought after vintage item until its recent reissue. Totally true to the original design, the reissue uses the same generous polyurethane padding to create the design’s characteristic softly rounded grid-like form. The innovative system of cables, hooks and rings developed for the sofa in the Seventies is also maintained and its these that allow the sofa to adapt to the evolving tastes and dynamic needs of its users. Unlimited modularity is a concept close to Bellini’s heart: “Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom’. There is a magical balance between the rigorous geometry of the square and the welcoming roundness of the heavily padded form that gives off undeniable charm and symbolises a generous and adventurous spirit. Camaleonda can be covered with B&B Italia’s entire textile and leather collection, allowing for another delightful variable in the multitude of possible combinations.
Mario Bellini studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and taught at the Instituto Superiore di Disegno Industriale in Venice from 1962-65. Until 1991 he worked as a design consultant for Olivetti while simultaneously designing independent products and furnishings. He established the architectural and design firm Studio Bellini in Milan in 1973. In 1987 the New York Museum of Modern Art honoured him with a retrospective exhibition of his works. He was an instructor at the Domus Academy in Milan from 1983-85, and editor in chief of Domus magazine between 1986-91. He assumed a position on the architectural faculty at the University of Genoa in 1995, and he teaches seminars and workshops at universities and academic institutions around the world.
