Positioned at the edge of Squamish’s UNESCO-recognised biosphere in British Columbia, Canada, The Sanctuary by BattersbyHowat Architects is conceived as an extension of the landscape itself. Rather than imposing on its steep, granite site, the home is embedded directly into the rock, allowing its form to emerge as a series of carefully arranged volumes that respond to views of forest, ocean and sky.
Guided by a philosophy of restraint and precision, the design prioritises clarity of space and a seamless relationship between interior and exterior. A continuous material palette reinforces this connection, with stone, timber and natural finishes extending throughout, while expansive openings draw light deep into the home and frame the surrounding terrain.
Beyond its architectural expression, the residence is shaped by a commitment to wellbeing. Carefully considered systems and material choices support a balanced internal environment, while spaces for gathering, retreat and reflection are integrated throughout.
In this way, The Sanctuary moves beyond a conventional dwelling, offering a more immersive mode of living defined by stillness, connection and a heightened awareness of place.
