Manufacturing furniture for the harsh Australian environment has seen Tait increasingly linked to works of longevity. The brand’s creations are as robust as they are emotive, telling the story of a company that has spent 30 years crafting in place.

In some ways, the Tait of today sharply contrasts the company first conceived by Susan and Gordon Tait in the early 90s. The company was born in the backstreets of Fitzroy and initially consisted of Gordon’s skill as a sheet metal worker being translated into one-off designs for clients. However, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary, the Tait operation includes 45 staff members, a small factory in Thomastown and pristine showrooms in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Recognising the requirements of the contemporary design community, Tait considers the tactile and emotional qualities of its furniture before emerging with pieces that will enhance the spaces they occupy.

Throughout its time in business, Tait has remained a proudly Australian brand, one that centres itself on local design and manufacturing. Such commitment to the Australian perspective is particularly impressive when the financial challenges of the decision are taken into account. Whilst many locally-made products entail a high price point – alienating the people who would wish to buy them – the Tait offering is reasonable. The company combines a time-monitored, automated production process with hand-finishing, creating furniture that is both soulful and efficiently made.

Whilst paying homage to the striking Australian landscape, Tait furniture epitomises quality design. In colour, the pieces capture the fascinating interaction between light and country, often showcasing the uplifted earth tones of the land. The presentation of the furniture reflects a genuine ambition to create timeless outcomes, with material protection provided in the form of a special finish that prevents corrosion. Exemplifying the Tait pursuit of excellence is the Volley Chair, an award-winning design featuring clean lines, delicate mesh and soft curves that echo the athletic lifestyle of many Australians today.
