Colourful Hospitality – Atomic Brewery

Atomic Brewery, located in Redfern, Sydney, is an experimental and colourful brewery that celebrates visitors’ love for beer by giving them an enriched interior to relax in. Inspired by the idea of sharing moments with friends, Atomic Brewery believes that beer is not just liquid but the moments it facilitates.

The team explores flavours in beer by flexing their creative muscles and have formed a unique space for gathering with friends no matter the time of year. Acknowledging that the suburb was going through a process of gentrification, the brief asked for a preservation of some of the streetscape as well as a sensitive approach to design. As such, the exterior of the building is kept raw and as it existed, except for the sections that were in dire need of repair or upgrading, such as the awning that covers the façade. Additionally, the interior of Atomic Brewery consists of raw brick, while the existing walls are dotted with spray paint from previous renovations, adding to brewery’s character and meeting the client’s brief.

Inspired by the idea of sharing moments with friends, Atomic Brewery believes that beer is not just liquid but the moments it facilitates.

Remaining sensitive to the fact that things change, the finished design of Atomic Brewery acknowledges the past through many of its design details. Furthermore, it allows people to feel comfortable and welcome from the moment they walk in. Capturing attention from the moment one does walk in is the main bar top, a unique and alluring bright green counter made of high-quality material. The colour was chosen due to its resemblance to hops – a main ingredient in beer.

Behind the counter are the tanks in which the beer is made. Though a challenge, the tanks were installed after the bar had been placed and coated. Marrying the industrial hardness of a brewery with the existing building, Atomic Brewery is a showcase in how a brewery and hospitality space can come together. Moreover, as a comfortable and inviting place, Atomic Brewery emphasises a love of beer and community.
