Sky Living – Beach House Broadbeach by Andrews Projects
Fortifying the desirable allure of beachside living, Beach House is an exploration of coastal refinement. With the ocean at its doorstep, Andrews Projects has developed an enviable bespoke contemporary apartment building that speaks to a broader grand vision.
Exuding a bright and airy composition, Beach House is remarkably placed, standing tall on Australia Avenue in Broadbeach, Queensland. Feeling somewhat serendipitous, the structure is north facing and is met by an abundance of natural light, breathing warmth into every facet of each apartment’s interior spaces. Behind the selection of this prime location is Andrews Projects. Founded in 2003 by Director Danny Andrews, Andrews Projects imbues each development with a newfound sense of passion and innovation, consequently delivering luxury high-end homes.
“A reason why we loved the Beach House site is for its corner position, which allows the building to be an iconic architectural statement,” explains Sarah Andrews, Sales Manager at Andrews Projects. The development – which sits in close proximity to parks, shops, restaurants, cafés and, of course, the beach – boasts 12 apartments across 14 levels. With its ocean milieu and an accessible outdoor lifestyle, Beach House feeds into its coastal aesthetic – one that encourages a unification of the internal and the external, where one cannot subsist without the other.
By investing in the development of architecture and nurturing relationships within the industry, Andrews Projects delivers homes relevant to clients’ lifestyles and tailored to their living. “Having direct client feedback gives us an intimate understanding of what our clients are looking for and has allowed us to deliver a project like Beach House,” Sarah says. Beach House is a dedication to individualised living, as each apartment was designed with the owners in mind – floorplans were skilfully crafted to fit each brief, with functionality and form informing every design decision.
bureau^proberts worked alongside Andrews Projects in the design of the project. “When Andrews Projects approached us for a site in Broadbeach, we were pretty excited because Broadbeach has always been a central part of the Gold Coast,” reflects Liam Proberts, Creative Director at bureau^proberts. “Our aim [for] Beach House was to create 12 really liveable spaces within the building and create that sense of arrival,” Liam explains. Through considered and sophisticated design, bureau^proberts helped to craft interior spaces that both optimise the apartment’s surrounding ocean views as well as assimilate a natural and organic aesthetic, felt through selected tones, colours and materials.
Beach House’s materiality continues the dialogue between the interior and the exterior, where the use of light timber finishes and textural limestone tie each element together.
Beach House is unique for its spacious proportions – it was essential that each apartment reflected the traditional spatial values afforded to residential homes. “The spaces are very generous – it really is like home-scaled spaces in an apartment and that was one of the aims at the very outset,” says Liam. This emphasis on space gives Beach House a unique sense of flow between internal areas – from the kitchen to the butler’s pantry, from living to laundry. Additionally, each home also features a kitchen island bench, a second living space and dual work-from-home dedicated areas, details that give an added element of luxury not frequently afforded to apartment living.
The interior palette takes inspiration from the landscape; each chosen material is infused with the elemental and nostalgic essence of Beach House’s ocean surrounds. “There’s a really lovely neutral tone to the interior,” says Kelly Geldard, Project Design Director at bureau^proberts. “We try to use natural materials wherever we can, so we’ve got lots of timber and stone.” Beach House’s materiality continues the dialogue between the interior and the exterior, where the use of light timber finishes and textural limestone tie each element together. The floor to ceiling doubled glazed windows also given expansive views out to the ocean, further connecting interior spaces with the coastal environment.
Another unique feature of the apartment complex is its exclusive rooftop facilities that redefine ‘sky living’. Sarah explains that as “an emphasis of the health and wellness for residents, the prime real-estate was reserved as a roof-top sanctuary, including a heated infinity pool, spa, sauna, gym and sunken lounge.” Preserving the rooftop for a communal functionality further reinforces a commitment made by Andrews Projects to ensure client satisfaction; this is executed through the genuine understanding and need for facilities that nurture wellness and community.
Elevated above the landscape, Beach House has an alluring exterior. Defined by its curved edges, the extended concrete slabs and vertical blades work as functional sun protectors and privacy screens. Curvature was chosen to further extend the architectural expression of the apartment building. “We approach multi-residential similar to housing, but with a twist,” Liam explains, “because we have to imagine ourselves as someone living in that apartment. All the materials and the finishes [within Beach House] were about creating a sense of home and comfort and liveability along the beach.”
Famous for its uninterrupted two kilometres of coastal scenery, Broadbeach evokes an elemental wonder and awe that is unequivocally absorbed by Beach House. “Beach House feels like it should be there. It’s of its site; it’s of its place,” Liam muses. “But always the most pleasing is when the people live there and enjoy it.” In collaboration with bureau^proberts, Andrews Projects has developed a series of contemporary inimitable apartments, with each aspect saturated by its surrounding beachside location.
