On Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, The Solstice Project by Kate Anderson Design reimagines a once-disjointed home into something quite extraordinary. “The Solstice Project is really about design in restraint. It’s about creating calm and refined spaces where the joinery works incredibly hard behind the scenes,” she explains.

Originally, the home lacked cohesion, with a kitchen that didn’t match the scale of the space or the lifestyle of its owners, and interiors that felt disconnected. Responding to the clients’ brief for a family home that was minimal yet warm, Anderson leant into a “less is more” approach and allowed this to lead every design decision.

Walking in, there’s an immediate sense of flow between indoors and out. “You really feel the outside being connected with the water and we wanted to bring that calmness into the internal space,” she says. Soft curves, a tranquil, muted palette and a bright, airy atmosphere speak to the residence’s stunning subtropical setting.

The home’s light and effortless aesthetic is thanks to beautifully integrated Blum systems.

The home’s light and effortless aesthetic is thanks to beautifully integrated Blum systems, which allow for concealed storage, uninterrupted cabinetry and increased functionality. In the kitchen, the LEGRABOX drawer system with inner drawers and the AMBIA-LINE inner dividing system maxmises space and makes for easy organisation, and a Blum SPACE TOWER with glass frontage offers a pantry solution that is both practical and refined. “They make the functionality and the usability for the client so much simpler and easier… it’s absolutely brilliant,” she says, highlighting its family-friendly design.

At the entry, where everyday items tend to accumulate, the Blum REVEGO duo creates a concealed drop zone. “The clients wanted the clean lines to continue through, but also wanted a drop zone that they could hide away,” she says. The result is a clutter-free arrival experience, protecting the home’s footprint and maintaining clean sightlines throughout.

“From the outside it looks really clean and aesthetically beautiful but behind the scenes there are so many Blum systems that are working to encourage better functional use of the space for the clients.”

The project, however, wasn’t without its challenges. A mid-renovation stairwell redesign forced a rethink of adjacent joinery. Instead of compromising, the team adapted the cabinetry to suit the revised design with Blum’s AVENTOS HK top lift system. This allowed them to gain improved access to impressive additional space. “It is hidden storage the clients weren’t able to use previously,” she notes.

In the bar zone, flexibility was key. Anderson integrated a pull-out shelf lock hidden behind a sliding stone splashback to allow for more usable storage. Designed to shift between entertaining, coffee-making and everyday use, the bar also relies on sleek Blum drawer runners for smooth, silent function.

Throughout the home, innovation like this is deliberately understated, allowing the residence to feel serene, cohesive and elevated. “What I love about the clean lines within this kitchen is that from the outside it looks really clean and aesthetically beautiful but behind the scenes there are so many Blum systems that are working to encourage better functional use of the space for the clients,” she reflects. It’s this perfect collaboration between design and hardware that underpins the success of this project and led it to take home the inaugural Blum Design Award for Design in Motion.
