Coast
Positioned on a landmark stretch of Queensland’s coastline, Coast pairs contemporary design with a deep appreciation for its beachfront setting.
On the stunning Northcliffe Beach between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, Coast is a spectacular response to one of the country’s most iconic landscapes. Developed by Sammut, the 38-level tower comprises just 54 residences, ranging from half-floor apartments to expansive full-floor homes, and draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the coastline that surrounds it.
For director Julian Sammut, the project carries a deep personal significance. The Sammut family have visited the area for three generations, and Julian looks back on fond memories of swimming here with his father and grandfather. “We’d say what a dream it would be to develop here one day,” he reflects. “Now, standing here today and looking up, I go, ‘Wow, our family name is pinned against a truly iconic building.’”
The significance and singularity of the site informed the project from the beginning. “When we first stood on the site, myself and my father were so excited,” he says. “We were standing on the beachfront of the Gold Coast, a site that could never be repeated.” Its position, elevated above the beachfront with uninterrupted views in every direction, became a key feature of the design.
Designed by PBD Architects, Coast’s architecture references the movement of the ocean through a series of soft curves and flowing lines. Frameless curved glazing and a sculpted facade create a form that appears shaped by its environment. As director Allen Sammut explains, “The general sense of our building looking from a bird’s eye view is a resemblance of the coastline. It’s wavy by nature. It’s got soft curves and it’s flowing.”
Interiors by Mim Design focus on luxury as well as liveability. Expansive windows allow for panoramic ocean views the moment you step through the door, while cleverly organised floor plans maximise the connection to the outdoors. “We’ve ensured that every single apartment’s main bedroom faces the oceanfront,” Allen says – something which is rare to find in Gold Coast developments. “The flow of the apartment allows every single bedroom unparalleled views, sunlight and cross ventilation.”
The residences were based around the idea of maintaining the qualities of a standalone luxury home. “We wanted to ensure that we were delivering something to the market that hadn’t been seen before,” Julian says, “where we were really taking into account that people didn’t have to compromise on what they already had within their luxury homes if they were to downsize.”
Key to this was sophisticated and elegant furniture by Coco Republic. “Coco has truly understood the brief and picked perfect furniture pieces for this space,” he adds, pointing to how the styling complements key architectural moments throughout the residences.
Beyond the apartments, Coast also features resort-style amenities including two pools, a commercial-grade gym, steam room and sauna, allowing residents to engage in a lifestyle that prioritises wellness, privacy and easy coastal living.
