Situated on Telegraph Hill, a traditional, meticulously preserved neighbourhood in San Francisco, Hidden House breaks away from conventional architectural styles and emerges as a contemporary home amid the historical backdrop of the city.

To bring the project to fruition, OPA needed to demonstrate contextual sensitivity with the facade, as dictated by the planning department. The building’s exterior showcases a blend of timber elements as well as a traditional bay window with extensive glazing, aligning with the historical charm of the neighbourhood. OPA incorporates modern touches throughout the residence; for example, while the bay window maintains a traditional silhouette, its oversized central glass panel introduces a contemporary twist. Additionally, in the corner where the wooden panels shift from a vertical to a horizontal orientation, this joint symbolises the fusion of modern technology with traditional craftsmanship.

Comprising three key components, the residence is crafted to pay homage to the history of the locale through a contemporary lens. Beginning with the facade, it conceals the inner essence of the dwelling, discreetly cloaking its bold and modern interior design. Additionally, the house boasts two distinct zones, each with its own unique character. One zone presents a vertical and abstract aesthetic, where the materiality is obscured by vibrant blue paint, while the other exudes a raw and refined charm. The initial zone aims to immerse visitors in a psychological experience, utilising colour as a bold element within the interior design, despite its relatively low cost compared to other features. While colour may be one of the more economical facets of the design, it represents a bold endeavour and underscores OPA’s commitment to crafting an immersive experience within the residence.

Transitioning to the second zone, OPA has achieved a strikingly contrasting effect. In this area, materials are expressed in their raw and refined forms, all positioned horizontally. This deliberate choice fosters a juxtaposition between the two zones while maintaining a connection that allows them to harmonise seamlessly. One particular detail that the architect is proud of is the exposed flooring, where the concrete and plywood are revealed at the top of the staircase. While typical practice often involves concealing such elements, OPA deliberately leaves them raw, instilling a sense of spontaneity and dynamism throughout the space.

For the lighting, the architect has installed two systems – one in each zone. In the raw zone, meshed sheet modules with LED strips have been fitted. Ultimately, the overarching idea is to unify the entire space while juxtaposing the spotlighting in the blue zone. The spotlights in this area serve a directional purpose rather than casting light horizontally, helping to distinguish between spaces and materials. With a focus on illuminating the central areas of the dwelling, including the kitchen, OPA also incorporates a skylight over the staircase to welcome natural light deeper into the home. Additionally, the skylight’s illumination adds a layer of complexity to the interior, contributing moments of expression to the interior design and enriching the abode’s character.

The careful and considered architectural statements embodied within Hidden House by OPA are spontaneous and dynamic, distinguishing it from the surrounding traditional San Francisco residences. These design choices not only differentiate the home but also imbue it with a unique character that resonates, establishing it as a standout presence in the neighbourhood.
