A Meeting of Old and New – INAX Tiles from Artedomus

Crafting a bridge between old and new, Captain Kelly’s Cottage is steeped in history. Imbued with rich hues and luxe glazing, INAX titles from Artedomus were selected for the restoration, seeing Artedomus bring forth more traditional styles into the contemporary sphere with dynamic collections.

The renovation of Captain Kelly’s Cottage sees Artedomus supply two tile products – INAX’s Sairin and Yohen Border collections. In a burnished bronze tone, John Wardle Architects showcases the Sairin collection throughout the kitchen, the fireplace hearth and a custom-made coffee table constructed especially for the space. The Yohen Border tiles provide an artful touch; installed as a mosaic, the Yohen Border collection is featured on the bathroom walls, behind the Agape Cheese Basin outside of the wash closet and in a custom writing desk.

Creating a meeting point between old and new, the INAX tiles delicately provide Captain Kelly’s Cottage with a balance of rustic masonry and contemporary design.

Now in three custom glazes, the scalloped form of the Sairin collection is inspired by a Japanese tradition, which originates from the practise of wrapping clay around bamboo. Featured in the cottage in a luxuriously rich tone, the Japanese ceramics give dimension and maturity to the home. Typically unusual in shape, the three-dimensional architectural tiles are difficult to grout and are traditionally used in exteriors, however, their incorporation into interior aesthetics continues to grow in popularity.

The Yohen Border tiles find the perfect balance between colour playfulness and sophistication. The Japanese word ‘yohen’ translates to ‘variation’ and is exemplified in the glaze that typifies the description. The Yohen Border mosaic, secured in sheets and in the variation YB12, is installed in Captain Kelly’s Cottage as a piece of art encompassed by a timber frame and is akin to the Japanese earthenware and pottery seen throughout the house, showcasing colour variation within the room’s neutral yet warm palette.

Exclusively sold at Artedomus, INAX tiles are incredibly strong, durable and high quality and have been used in high profile architectural projects since the 1920s Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Sculpted with hard porcelain, the product needs next to no maintenance, is not prone to staining due to the quality of the glaze and are of a low water repelling porosity.
