Lavender Bay Home by Alexandra Kidd Interior Design
With an ethos of quiet luxury, Alexandra Kidd Interior Design crafts Lavender Bay Home, a family residence with a prime position on Sydney Harbour.
In the Sydney harbourside suburb of the same name, Lavender Bay Home is set within a tightly-held apartment block, with stunning views across the water to the bridge and city beyond. Despite its proximity to the urban environment, the apartment is immersed in the tranquil ambience of the harbour, making it the ideal place for a family retreat. “The client for this project is a long-standing client,” says Alexandra Kidd, principal at Alexandra Kidd Interior Design (AKID). “It was a really lovely opportunity to work again with this family and to create a completely different space.”
While the project is flooded with natural light, it also offers areas that counter this brightness to foster a sense of intimacy and reflection.
Emphasising high-quality materials, Lavender Bay Home embodies a sophisticated response to a simple brief: to deliver a quietly luxurious, durable space to live and entertain for years to come. While the project is flooded with natural light, it also offers areas that counter this brightness to foster a sense of intimacy and reflection.
Entering the apartment, the first impression is one of spatial generosity: the foyer, reminiscent of a gallery, echoes the grand scale of entry spaces found in houses. To the immediate left is the children’s bedroom, “created for the ultimate family sleepover,” says Kidd. With bunk beds, a day bed, handmade light fixtures and colourful wallpaper, the space is playful and flows into a children’s bathroom, which features an equally playful freestanding green glass tub.
To the right of the hallway is an elegant guest bedroom and, further down, a lounge room that can be closed off from the rest of the home and which, like the master suite, is defined by a gentle, cocooning quality. The living-kitchen-dining area unfolds at the end of the hallway where expansive windows offer varying sweeping aspects of the harbour.
Throughout, the residence’s materiality is a standout feature. “The material palette was really meant to be an extension of all the natural colours and textures beyond the apartment,” says Morgan Reid, AKID’s lead interior designer on the project. “We selected Elton Group’s Eveneer in Milkwood as the main timber veneer throughout the home due to its very consistent character and beautiful softness.”
The darker-hued Eveneer Ristretto, also from Elton Group, contributes visual richness while enhancing the character of the light-toned Milkwood. “It was the special finish used inside a lot of the joinery, so you have this beautiful unwrapping element as you open all the cupboards,” says Kidd. “It was also used and extended into a lot of the custom-made furniture pieces.”
Showcasing a balance of open and intimate environments, Lavender Bay Home allows a family to live effortlessly on the edge of Sydney Harbour. AKID’s interpretation of quiet luxury is compelling, enabling forms and materials to create a nuanced, multisensory experience of place.
