Designed for a young family seeking a slower pace and greater connection to their surroundings, Little Birch embodies what Peter Ahern, director and co-founder of buck&simple, describes as “resort vibes” and “domestic ease” – an atmosphere of calm achieved through craftsmanship, materiality and spatial refinement.

Rather than competing with the eclectic mix of neighbouring typologies, the exterior adopts a restrained yet confident architectural language, drawing on brutalist influences to create a composed and enduring presence within the streetscape.

Responding to the dramatic conditions of Sydney’s coastline, the home is carefully calibrated to withstand exposure to wind, salt and changing weather patterns. Rather than competing with the eclectic mix of neighbouring typologies, the exterior adopts a restrained yet confident architectural language, drawing on brutalist influences to create a composed and enduring presence within the streetscape. Concealed behind lush landscaping, the entry sequence offers a subtle introduction to the detailed design narrative that unfolds throughout the home.

Central to the project is an appreciation for craft. The team approached key architectural elements as opportunities for sculptural expression, most notably through two distinct staircases. One cascades between levels as a monolithic form, while the other traces a ribbon-like path through the interior, introducing movement and visual lightness. Referencing the work of Carlo Scarpa, the sculptural stair celebrates concrete in its most authentic state, reflecting both the architects’ and clients’ shared appreciation for carefully resolved detailing.

Although conceived as an open-plan residence, the design deliberately creates moments of separation and intimacy, ensuring distinct zones emerge within a relatively compact footprint.

Within the home, the kitchen anchors the living spaces beneath an expansive void that introduces a sense of drama to the dining area. Although conceived as an open-plan residence, the design deliberately creates moments of separation and intimacy, ensuring distinct zones emerge within a relatively compact footprint. Large openings dissolve the threshold between inside and out, extending living spaces into the landscape and strengthening the connection to nature.

The rear garden, while compact, is designed to maximise amenity and support the family’s love of entertaining. A swimming pool, outdoor cooking area and flexible gathering spaces work together as a cohesive outdoor room, balancing functionality with a sense of escape. Thoughtfully integrated landscaping reinforces this ambition, creating a lush environment that feels removed from its suburban context.

Environmental responsiveness underpins the project. Broad awnings provide protection from sun and coastal weather, while generous openings encourage natural ventilation and maintain a connection to the outdoors year-round. Throughout the day, shifting light and shadows animate the interior, revealing the depth of material and detail embedded within the design. The result is a home that not only accommodates family life but elevates it through enduring craftsmanship, spatial generosity and a profound sense of calm.
