Lone Pine by CLB Architects
Surrounded by scenic mountains, Lone Pine by CLB Architects is a family home located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. By embracing the natural landscape, the team has created a home that opens up to the surrounds and nearby spring creek that is frequented by native animals such a foxes, elks and deer.
Construction in two pavilions connected by a linkway, Lone Pine is deftly separated into private and public spaces. Within one pavilion, CLB Architects has placed the public functions such as the kitchen, living and dining rooms, while the other pavilion holds the private bedrooms and bathrooms. A linkway between them serves as the home’s entry.
For Lone Pine, the architect’s goal was to create a home that strikes a balance between warm wood elements and smooth abstract plaster surfaces. As such, the material palette consists of an array of custom detailing that enriches the interior. Leather accents are featured about the home in judicious ways to add little moments and elevates the senses of touch and smell.
Challenged by design guidelines set by the local architecture and design committee of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, CLB Architects had to find ingenious ways to meet the desires of the client. One such guideline outlined that all the roofs in the subdivision needed to be gabled with an overhang. However, after negotiations, CLB Architects were able to add deep recessed porches that created covered outdoor spaces to fulfil the requirements.
For Lone Pine, CLB Architects has embraced the wealth of natural light not just for warmth but for its ability to add drama and animation to the materials.
Playing an important part in the liveability of the residence is natural light. For Lone Pine, CLB Architects has embraced the wealth of natural light not just for warmth but for its ability to add drama and animation to the materials. Furthermore, the articulation of the exterior encourages a natural and playful exchange of light and shadow that changes throughout the day. This is seen most evidently in the rear covered porch that has a hole in the roof plane.
Further complementing the home is an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. This can be seen from the main bedroom, where the owners can easily step out onto the balcony to view the snowy mountains and listen to the ski reports as they enjoy a morning coffee. The entry sequence is surrounded by foliage and a private rear courtyard with aspen trees communicates a cultivated landscape.
