Two of the most important factors when designing a public pool are safety and longevity. As such, for Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre by Warren and Mahoney, slip-resistant tiles by Klay Tiles are used in wet areas to enhance these factors along with easy maintenance and cleanliness.

Helming the design of Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre is Warren and Mahoney, which has collaborated with Klay Tiles on the selection of tiles throughout the aquatic centre. Moreover, the architects sought the help of the community, who brought their own ideas to the new design of the beloved centre. A motif of a King Fisher on the exterior of the building represents the stories of the traditional landowners and the native animals to the area.

As a beloved gathering spot for the community, the original aquatic centre was positioned around the 50-metre pool. So, wanting to bring back this familiar layout, the architects have repositioned the centre around the main pool as well as built an additional range of facilities, which include a fitness centre and a wide variety of other aquatic experiences. Bringing together the passion and expertise of the design team, contractor, suppliers and sub-contractors, Warren and Mahoney were able to bring the aquatic centre into the modern age. Additionally, with the expert help of Klay Tiles’ high-end ceramics, which are imported from Germany, the aquatic centre has been further emphasised to encourage a new generation.

For health and safety, the pool tiles are infused with titanium dioxide during the firing process. This reacts with oxygen in the air to create a natural barrier for bacteria and an easy-to-clean surface. For the inside pool zones, the rooms are kept at 100 per cent humidity to stop evaporation and cease any bacteria breeding. By choosing to work with Klay Tiles, Warren and Mahoney provides a venue that supports safety through incorporating anti-slip technologies and is robust enough to last decades.

With a great range of options for the community to come together, Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre is sustainable in its design and reduces the costs for the council to run. However, most importantly, the new pool centre is rejuvenated for the public to enjoy for many more years to come.
