Palisades Residence by Abramson Architects is a family home built on the slopes of Rustic Canyon. Featuring a unique set of design and architectural tactics, the home does not disregard the landscape but becomes a part of it with small intimate moments both inside and outside, which allow the owners to appreciate the lands typology.

On the hills of Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, is Palisades Residence by Abramson Architects, a house that sits upon the landscape without disrupting the natural flow. From street level, the home opens onto a one-storey main level before descending down the sloped landscape. On the main level, the architects have designed a tall space with concrete walls and split skylights – designed specifically to allow light to reflect and bounce through the interior design. However, as one moves further into the house, the walls are opened and the ceiling is lifted to gift breathtaking views of the canyon and beyond.

The upper level contains the primary suite, which has its own his and hers bathrooms and dressing rooms with private views of the canyon. Additionally, this main level of living contains the kitchen, dining room, living room and the covered outdoor space that leads to the outdoor kitchen, dining area and pool – all of which are complemented by views out to the canyon and Los Angeles. On the level below are three secondary suites with their own bathrooms and further views of the landscape. One of the more special moments within the home’s design is the exterior staircase that leads down to the guesthouse, which enables guests to privately access the dwelling without having to go through the main house.

Surrounded by Rustic Canyon and situated on a steep hillside, the house is seamlessly integrated into the sloped typography. However, wanting to instil a tactile, natural connection, Abramson Architects have created intimate moments throughout the interior design where the owners can feel in touch with the land. Moreover, due to the home’s locality and the possibilities of fire, the architects have employed non-combustible materials over the exterior, such as concrete, metal and timber with a fire-protective board behind. To combat the winds that rise up through the canyon at certain times of the day is a series of custom-designed aluminium windscreens that are freely moveable.

With a palette of complementary materials, Palisades Residence is built to respond to the surrounding environment and typology of the land. As a place where the owners can find reprieve or entertain guests whilst being surrounded by nature and sweeping views, Palisades Residence is unparalleled in its form.
