Sausalito Houseboat by Craig Steely Architecture is a home that evokes a deep appreciation of its bayside surrounds. Located just north of San Francisco, in a small houseboat community, the residence is enriched with a deep history that goes back to World War II.

A predominant area in which ships were once built, Sausalito Bay is home to a variety of houseboats and enriched with a vibrant community of people. Working closely with the client – who wanted a spacious houseboat – Craig Steely Architecture took to designing something that went against the grain and pushed away from the typical aesthetic and design of other houseboats in the area. Clad in materials that accommodate to the weather and surrounds, such as old red wood from another project, Sausalito Houseboat has been designed to last.

When the architect and client first discovered the lot there was a sinking barge where the home was to be put. However, interested with the history of the space, the architect and client took to designing a houseboat that referenced the bohemian history while being modern in its design. Entering in from the dock and onto a gang plank, there is a small garden that complements the front of the home and, once inside, there is a direct line of sight to the living room and beyond. Through a raised entrance foyer, the home opens into the primary bathroom and bedroom, which is then complemented with views over the living space and out onto the bay. On the communal level, the kitchen is placed just a few steps below the living space – further down is the spare bedroom and entry to the front garden.

To set the houseboat apart from others, Craig Steely Architecture has used layers and big, open volumes throughout. These volumes, which appear as large circles, are designed at the front and rear of the home, while multiple layers are placed throughout the interior to enhance the views. Instead of using sheet rock for the interior design, Craig Steely Architecture has used painted cladded slats over the interior of the houseboat. Moreover, the material palette is kept simple to highlight the greens of the trees surrounding and the blue hues of the water. With a rich history and a unique backdrop, Sausalito Houseboat creates a space in which its owner can find respite yet feel connected to the community.
