Located in the heart of Bondi, S’WICH by Studio Shand is a contemporary yet casual sandwich shop. Tasked with architecture, interior design and custom furniture design, Studio Shand brings a futuristic touch to the fit-out with selective finishes, fixtures and materials.

Situated just a few streets from one of Sydney’s most famous beaches, S’WICH is a sensory experience. Set within the shell of an art deco building, the interior is fitted with custom café tables and amenities distinctive to the sandwich bar. Delivering a food focused experience that encapsulates design, music and art, Studio Shand steers away from traditional ideas of cafés and restaurants and, instead, turns S’WICH into a dining space for the future.

Careful delineation is employed by Studio Shand between dining, ordering and kitchen production spaces. Upon entry, a bar, floating Corian section, aluminium drum and painted FC sheet imbue the space with a modern design approach. An open, stainless steel kitchen allows patrons to wait and watch as their sandwiches or salads are made upon order. A bar section for four sits just off the kitchen, whilst a private table and washrooms are positioned towards the rear of the space, allowing the wider dining area at the front to embrace the bustling atmosphere of the surrounding streetscape.

Alongside architecture and interior design, Studio Shand also created custom furniture pieces such as café tables, as well as distinct cutlery holders, tip jars and light pendants. The structural form of the café tables mirrors the interior palette, whilst the smaller products were chosen and designed for their robustness, tactile nature, quality, and ability to reflect and refract light. The colours and shapes of S’WICH – custom red and beige, and squares and circles – are then used as key touch points throughout the diner, further referencing the logo of the sandwich bar.

Uniting the colours, materials and shapes of S’WICH, Studio Shand has created a dining experience of the future. Through a modern touch, both locals and tourists are given the opportunity to sit and soak up the electric energy of Bondi.
