Tucked within a leafy Melbourne suburb, Terracotta House by Lande Architects is reimagined into a much-loved family home through a lens of restraint, rhythm and admiration.

With a brief centred on accommodating a growing family of five, the architectural response is both grounded and elevated, transforming memory into form and emotion into space.

Drawing from rural roots and inspired by traditional Marseille tiles, the extension is clad in SK1N terracotta by Brickworks, subtly blending past and present. The home’s facade recedes into its suburban context, camouflaged yet expressive, until its full warmth reveals itself within.

A sunken dining room becomes the emotional heart of the house, immersed in garden views and anchored by a custom Made by Morgen table. Internal materiality continues the dialogue with the exterior: rich timbers, rusted hues and tactile stone cultivate a lived-in sensibility. Carefully calibrated interventions allow for flow, intimacy and spatial generosity without overextending the footprint.

Terracotta House is less a renovation than a respectful evolution – one that favours intention over impact. It reflects a family’s connection to place and ritual, offering spaces that flow, support and endure. In its modesty, it quietly exemplifies the power of architecture to carry memory forward.
