Trace by Storey: Episode 5
From Belgian forests to finished floors, Trace by Storey reveals a level of craftsmanship that transforms timber into a complete design language.
For Made by Storey co-founders Theo Perdikis and Damir Dzuzdanovic, a recent visit to Belgium was an opportunity to take stock of how far they have come with Trace, their new range of refined timber flooring. Crafted entirely in Belgium and shaped by generations of woodworking expertise, the flooring collection is designed to bring consistency, customisation and quality to contemporary interiors.
The visit offered an insight into the breadth of the Trace range, from finishes and colour palettes through to matching joinery, doors and curved applications. For Dzuzdanovic, the ability to create a cohesive material language across an entire project is what sets the collection apart.
“That’s probably the game changer for us, the fact that any colour we have can match in the joinery,” he explains. “It’s literally endless in terms of customisation. Colours can be customised as well. I think it just excites the market. It’s something that the timber flooring industry doesn’t really have.”
That commitment to craftsmanship is evident closer to home in a residential project by Studiojos in Sydney’s Vaucluse. Designed as a serene oasis inspired by contemporary Belgian architecture, the home layers tonal textures and simplified architectural forms to create a feeling of calm and timelessness.
For Studiojos founder Joss Knight, the flooring was integral from the very beginning. “With every space that we design, it’s always from the ground up. So the flooring has been quite a pivotal piece for us in the design process of this project,” he says. “I guess it was the foundation of selecting all the other materiality in the space.”
The Belgian origins of the product also aligned naturally with the project’s design focus. “For this project in particular, we were influenced by a lot of the Belgian finishes and the raw grittiness of their products,” Knight says. “Being educated on the Trace product and understanding that it was manufactured and farmed in Belgium, it was a no-brainer for us.”
Months after completion, the flooring continues to perform exactly as intended. From expansive living spaces to highly used kitchen zones and custom stair detailing, Trace has proven as stunning and durable as the day it was installed. “The product speaks for itself,” he says. “Seeing it in situ and knowing the clients have lived here for the past nine months and they still look perfect is a testament to the craftsmanship and the ability of the product.”
Across its incredible journey from Antwerp to Australia, Trace showcases how thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship and complete customisation can come together to underpin incredible architectural spaces.
