The project was for a farming family who were looking to downsize from their large house in rural WA to the beachside suburb of Cottesloe. The home, or Little Albion as it has become known, has a contemporary modern Australian aesthetic and is situated on a relatively small 312m2 lot in an area of Cottesloe that predominantly features old 1900’s cottages. We were approached by the clients, who happened to be an old friend’s parents, to design a new home, replacing the existing cottage they used as a home away from home in the years when their kids were at boarding school.
The new home (and only their second ever) was to be full of texture, light, and functional (all the things the old cottage wasn’t) – their forever home in which they could finally begin to settle down, having worked on their farm their entire lives, retiring to Cottesloe to spend more time with family and friends. The project combines off-form concrete walls and ceilings, contrasted with the warmth of natural Australian Blackbutt timber and Silvertop Ash timber cladding.
