Highly attuned to the human experience of design, Studio Yugen produces elevated interiors with multisensory detail. Reputed for its unapologetic use of colour and texture, the practice works across the high-end residential and commercial sectors of Queensland, building a legacy of refined yet playful interiors.
Based in Burleigh Heads, Studio Yugen encapsulates a diverse portfolio of professional experience with international influence. The multicultural team of interior designers includes creatives originating from Sweden, Sydney, Melbourne and northern New South Wales, with a combined 12 years of history dedicated to spatial craft. Informed by an exciting blend of personal backgrounds, Studio Yugen is drawn to bright and daring outcomes that align with the company’s own established philosophy.
Based upon the belief that enriched lives are set within well-designed spaces, as a result – regardless of the context of a project, whether it is to complement a new build or transform a pre-existing dwelling – the work of Studio Yugen is oriented towards improving the human experience. “We use layers of colour and texture to inject interest and personality into our spaces, to ensure each job is unique,” says Georgina Twyford, Creative Director of Studio Yugen. “We research the way in which lighting affects materials throughout different times of the day and enjoy the subtle shifts and changes that take place in a space depending on the application of materials.” The result is an intimate and expressive interior that reflects the rhythm of time; an interior for occupants to feel strongly connected.
With each new project, Studio Yugen follows a holistic process that begins with considering the relationships between buildings and people. Recognising the correlation between interiors and the satisfaction of human needs, the practice values conversations with architects, landscape designers and builders who are also assigned to the home or commercial space; the open system of communication is conducive to a thorough understanding of the specific requirements of the project and a cohesive design response. From the same inclusive mindset emerges the desire to collaborate with clients, whose introspection is always valued.
Exemplifying the high calibre of work that defines the studio is Jewel Box – a thoughtfully crafted and layered interior space.
The studio encourages clients to immerse themselves within textures prior to signing off on any three-dimensional renders. “Interiors are for touching and living in,” Georgina explains. “We opt for natural lighting solutions and work with the architect to achieve this first. Then we layer up our hard materials – ensuring we’re selecting raw, real materials to provide a natural feel – before we layer fabrics for soft furnishings,” she says. “We highlight the importance of leathers, wool rugs and linen fabrics for their natural, calming nature.” Similarly, Studio Yugen often curates custom furniture and styling packages for individual projects as well.
Exemplifying the high calibre of work that defines the studio is Jewel Box – a thoughtfully crafted and layered interior space. A welcoming sub-penthouse, Jewel Box engages with the client’s love of art by providing a supportive internal framework with a strong sense of spatial flow. Having initially considered a traditional coastal palette, Studio Yugen instead produced a more emotive interpretation, utilising richer hues to represent the client’s personal taste and well-travelled history. A restrained materiality proposes a soothing environment, with fluted glass consistently applied for its soft and weightless visual quality. Floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains diffuse the harsh Queensland sunlight, reinforcing the home’s status as a personal sanctuary. Throughout the project, Studio Yugen demonstrated mastery over the principle of balance, harmonising dramatic navy blue, heavy marble and brass elements with lightweight counterparts.
From conception to completion, the work of Studio Yugen fosters a sense of unity, inevitably leading to an enhanced quality of life. “We want people to experience the exterior through the interior,” Georgina explains. “Interiors are still – yet very animated.” It is this consideration for human connection and experience that allows the studio to seamlessly craft intimate and contemporary detail in a way that is distinctly their own.
