Tucked into the landscape in Point Leo, Casa Bobbanarring sits connected to the surrounds, allowing the living elements to weave in among the built. Branch Studio Architects nods to Brazilian modernism with the use of grounded concrete to anchor the home and allowing for key connections between the interiors and the natural elements.

Setting itself apart from the traditional coastal vernacular, Casa Bobbanarring uses its solidity and the weight of the comprising masonry to form a presence on site. Aligned along the promenade with no other properties sitting between the home and the water, the proposed form is pulled in from each of the boundary edges to allow for a clear connection to the landscape. A softening of the transition between the neighbours honours the location and the privilege of being able to reside there. Named after its Brazilian influences and the indigenous name for the area, the residence by Branch Studio Architects combines concrete with the textural warmth of timber both internally and externally.

The framed views within are created by using the blades of the concrete to clearly define the outlook and focus sightlines. With the lower level immersed within greenery, the upper level connects to the ocean in the distance with an enhanced openness. The functions of the home radiate from a central and connecting stair, which also acts as a sculptural moment. A balance is created between the more passive and active areas, with a courtyard space acting to bind the home. Open to the sky and formed from a sweeping arc in the concrete ceiling plane, the protected outdoor space aligns with a northern aspect and provides a sheltered transition between inside and out, and away from coastal winds.

Tapering up from the ground into the roof plane, concrete formwork allows and encourages native grasses to cover and surround the home, boosting passivity. Fulfilling the need for a place to both retreat to and disconnect, retaining a connection to place and the surrounds forms an important part of the home’s narrative and directs both an openness and integration of nature. The contrast between the concrete and the timber make way for the accompanying contrast between linear and circular elements throughout the home, where oculus forms bring light deep into the living space and a uniquely triangular fireplace sits as a key feature.

Embracing the surrounding landscape, Casa Bobbanarring is both boldly present yet sensitive in its insertion. Through a robust and contemporary lens, Branch Studio Architects ensures an appropriate response to site with a continued longevity.
