Warmed Connection – Footscray 1 by Agius Scorpo Architects
An extention of its legacy, Footscray 1 is the result of a crafted and detailed approach that reconfigures the building fabric to allow for optimal natural light and ventilation. Agius Scorpo Architects embraces the modesty of the site and the budget limitations to sculpt a distinctive and responsive addition that is embedded into the landscape.
The handmade details of the original Edwardian home inspire the new addition to the rear. The creation of the new volume saw a close collaboration between design, detailing and construction to achieve the optimal balance of openness and robustness needed for a family home. Through the creation of a central living zone, the kitchen, dining and lounge spaces are combined, moving away from the separation of the original planning. The existing spaces become the more retreat-like areas in the home, whilst the new addition houses the areas for gathering and shared co-habitation. Agius Scorpo Architects uses the established relationship with the owner to carefully tease out the needs for the home and overlay an element of the experimental.
A new openness engages a connection with the surrounding landscape and natural elements, with generous glazing and operable openings that encourage a flowing movement across thresholds. The old and new eras of the home embody their own character and charm and are each reflective of their time periods. The expressed differences cater for the distinctions between moments of sanctuary and those of higher animation. A robust approach defines the new, with a darker and more anchored palette of finishes that is warmed through the inclusion of timber throughout.
Extending the natural connection to the exterior, the new addition is wrapped in a combination of timber on the upper portion and red brick on the base. The brick signifies an anchoring in place and continues a textural lineage to the original. The dramatic slope of the raked ceiling of the new addition also lifts the eye skyward. The planning strategy saw the existing and new structures be split into separate zones that redefine the function of the home’s interior spaces and welcome light and ventilation into new areas. Creating an active home environment was key for the owners, as was defining the transition between the eras.

As a labour of love for both owner and architect, Footscray 1 is brought to life through a personal lens. Aguis Scorpo Architects ignites a new way of living within the home and combines the principles of simplicity and natural connection to result in a residence that is a respectful merging of eras.
