Timeless Warmth – Elm Residence by Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN
Elm Residence, crafted by Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN, gracefully extends around an established elm tree on site. Both architect and designer carry forward a commitment to craftsmanship and intricate detailing from the old structure to the new, placing emphasis on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere and maximising opportunities for natural light and ventilation in the interior spaces.
The new addition’s open volumes are linked to the original Edwardian-era home through subtle and textural finishes. Situated in Glen Iris, a suburb in Melbourne, the expanded family residence retains key heritage details at the front of the site, which have then been integrated into a more connected living arrangement towards the rear. This smooth transition into the living and dining areas continues on, across indoor-outdoor thresholds, further connecting to the garden and surrounding landscape. The home’s experience is crafted to evoke a sense of journey, incorporating layers that captivate interest and achieve balance through deliberate contrasts in design. Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN both enhance and highlight the familiarity of the abode.
The rear of the dwelling now features a discreetly positioned addition that remains hidden from street view. Connecting the different eras within the home is a timber-lined corridor that serves as a transition point, and this natural material becomes a key element guiding the design of the new addition. Recognising the historical significance of timber used in the original residence, it was important to reinterpret this material through a contemporary lens for the new spaces as well.
The modern extension, distinguished by its sleek, box-like form, emerges as a thoughtfully designed counterpart to the original design of the home. Yet it is the considered selection of materials that ensures Elm Residence feels refined and elevated. The natural stone used throughout, from the travertine-clad island to the Molveno Blanco marble, exhibits classical, expressive veining. The material palette unifies the interior spaces, creating an ambiance that is both serene and balanced.
Elm Residence takes advantage of the generous expanse of its site and retains nods to its original design. Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN ensure the home not only honours its Edwardian origins but also boldly embraces contemporary liveability.
