Moonee Ponds House by Lovell Burton Architecture
In response to the diverse range of historic homes that surround it, Moonee Ponds House stands as a contemporary dwelling that reflects the neighbourhood’s established rhythm.
Lovell Burton Architecture thoughtfully incorporates sensitive gestures into the design, balancing them within a refined structure softened by the presence of a tranquil garden. Given the close proximity of Queens Park, integrating an active garden into the residence was a key decision for the owners. To maintain harmony with existing architectural elements, newly introduced features effortlessly blend in while also presenting subtle differences. Wrapped in timber battens, movement from within can be sensed from the outside, yet the screening provides a sense of privacy and separation between public and private realms. Lovell Burton Architecture ensures the home blends in seamlessly with the streetscape while offering a modern reinterpretation.
Inside, a sense of minimalism pervades, with clean and calm lines defining the spaces. Ornate detailing is also eschewed in favour of including plenty of storage throughout, and the arrangement of multiple floors naturally divides the home into active and passive zones. Addressing the challenges of the site, the architect strategically positions the upper level so that it appears to recede as one approaches the residence, thereby reducing its perceived scale.
There’s a clear efficiency evident throughout the dwelling, with understated gestures laying the groundwork for years to come. Though collected pieces and artwork come and go over time, the enduring and timeless foundation of the home ensures that it remains relevant regardless of these fluctuations. The emphasis on spacious communal areas is also juxtaposed with cosier retreat spaces, enabling the architect to cultivate a sense of enclosure. Shielded by a bespoke timber screen, the abode retains its privacy while welcoming natural light and gentle breezes, upholding a sense of detachment from the outside world.
Employing a balanced and light approach, Lovell Burton Architecture captures a contemporary suburban spirit in Moonee Ponds House, emphasising open, sustainable and mindful living. Through sinking the ground level and carefully adhering to site parameters, the architect sees that the home harmoniously and respectfully sits in place.
