To challenge the dark and narrow spaces within the original structure, Brad Swartz Architects adopts an open and connected approach in Up Down House to bring natural light into every space.

Despite a frontage that is just over four meters in width, Up Down House was reconfigured to enhance the perceived scale. The integration of skylights and voids allows free-flowing ventilation and draws the eye skyward. Framing vistas and sightlines to the views beyond was also integral to the planned approach to elevate the everyday experience of the home. Through the proposal of a stepped floor plan, Brad Swartz Architects grounded the spaces within the surrounding context intentionally while retaining nods to the original terrace style.

Set in Surry Hills, the quaint home emphasises its immersion in such a vibrant urban environment. Concrete floors seamlessly connect the kitchen and lounge, and an insertion of colour and sculptural details injects personality and character. These elements and their typical transience will allow the house to adapt to personal aesthetic over the years to come. At its base, the dwelling is monochromatic with touches of textural timber to be as flexible as possible.

Taking inspiration from the Victorian origins of the structure, the scale of the dining room and the hallway are accentuated to celebrate the transition between the natural movements through the home. Delineating the public and private areas was key, and these shifts in function are signalled through changes in ceiling height and room size. Newly designed joinery and storage is also kept at a lower height to not impeded on sightlines and to maintain an openness and flow throughout. The underpinning of a timeless, enduring palette binds the historical and contemporary elements together. The muted base also serves as the ideal backdrop for a curated art collection by the owners and allows each piece to stand out.

Up Down House combines both considered detailing and an elevation of quality that is respectful to the home’s legacy and reflective of the owners. Brad Swartz Architects ensures the residence is fit for a contemporary lifestyle, boasting a calm and immersive experience amid its busy locale and embracing its history.
